February 21, 2013 — The Agriculture Department announced the March Federal order Class I base milk price this afternoon at $17.80 per hundredweight, down 41 cents from February but $1.50 above March 2012, and equates to about $1.53 per gallon. That put the 2013 Class I average at $18.33, up from $17.38 at this time a year ago and compares to $16.44 in 2011.
The AMS surveyed butter price averaged $1.5393 per pound, up 1.1cent from February. Nonfat dry milk averaged $1.5644, up fractionally. Cheese averaged $1.6480, down 10.6 cents, and dry whey averaged 63.99 cents, down 1.4 cents.

January 30, 2013 — The January Federal order (FO) Class III milk price begins 2013 on a down note although it’s the highest January price in five years. The Agriculture Department announced the benchmark price at $18.14 per hundredweight (cwt.), down 52 cents from December but $1.09 above January 2012, and equates to about $1.56 per gallon.
The January FO Class IV price is $17.63, down 20 cents from December and $1.07 above a year ago.
The four-week, AMS-surveyed cheese price used in calculating the FO prices averaged $1.7485 per pound, down 4.4 cents from December. Butter averaged $1.5066, down 9.2 cents. Nonfat dry milk averaged $1.5601, up 2.2 cents, and dry whey averaged 65.03 cents, down 1.1 cents.
California’s comparable 4a and 4b prices will be announced by the California Department of Food and Agriculture on Friday.

January 16, 2013 — The February Federal order Class I base milk price was announced by USDA today at $18.21 per hundredweight (cwt.), down 76 cents from January but $1.18 above February 2012, and equates to about $1.57 per gallon. That put the two-month average at $18.59, up from $17.92 a year ago and $15.55 in 2011.
The two-week, AMS-surveyed butter price averaged $1.5280 per pound, down 8 1/2-cents from January. Nonfat dry milk averaged $1.5603, up 1.6 cents. Cheese averaged $1.7535, down 7.2 cents, and dry whey averaged 65.36 cents, down a half-cent from January.
