CDFA dairy product manufacturing cost report online

(February 28, 2012) California’s Department of Food & Agriculture published its Manufacturing Cost Annual for dairy products and posted it to the Dairy Marketing website:

The report includes 2010 annual raw cost data and additional narrative for California butter, nonfat powder, cheddar cheese and skim whey powder processing. Preliminary data had been released October 2011 at www.cdfa.ca.gov/dairy/uploader/postings/manufacturingcost/.
• The 2010 average cost to produce cheddar cheese was 19.21¢/lb., down from 19.66¢/lb. in 2009 and the lowest cost per pound since 2005.
• The 2010 average cost of manufacturing butter was 17.81¢/lb., down from 18.11¢/lb. in 2009.
• The cost to produce nonfat dry milk was 20.70¢/lb., up from 19.84¢/lb. in 2009.

January Dairy Cow Slaughter Numbers Released

(February 24, 2012) USDA’s  dairy cow slaughter numbers for January totaled 264,000.  That’s just 2,000 more cows than in December, and the same number that were slaughtered a year ago.

NASS Highlights

(February 24, 2012) Butter prices received for 25 kilogram and 68 pound boxes meeting United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Grade AA standards averaged $1.44 per pound for the week ending February 18, 2012. The United States (US) price per pound decreased 5.7 cents from the previous week.

Cheddar Cheese prices received for US 40 pound blocks averaged $1.50 per pound for the week ending February 18, 2012. The price per pound decreased 2.7 cents from the previous week. The price for US 500 pound barrels adjusted to 38 percent moisture averaged $1.53 per pound, down 0.4 cent from the previous week.

Dry Whey prices received for bag, tote, and tanker sales meeting USDA Extra Grade standards averaged 64.0 cents per pound for the week ending February 18, 2012. The US price per pound decreased 0.2 cent from the previous week.

Nonfat Dry Milk prices received for bag, tote, and tanker sales meeting USDA Extra Grade or United States Public Health Service (USPHS) Grade A standards averaged $1.36 per pound for the week ending February 18, 2012. The US price per pound decreased 4.0 cents from the previous week.
