LIP Offers Cattle Death Loss Indemnities Due to Heat

Dairy farmers suffering death losses of young stock, cows and bulls due to the extreme heat may be eligible for USDA indemnity payments under the Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP), authorized under the 2008 Farm Bill.

According to a USDA fact sheet, 2011 maximum payments for dairy cattle under LIP are: $249/head for cattle <400 lbs.; $499 for cattle 400-799 lbs.; $766 for non-adult cattle >800 lbs.; and about $998 for adult cows and bulls.
